A heat wave strikes Amsterdam and the inhabitants of a poor neighbourhood hit the local swimmingpool and are surprisingly candid about how they cope with their difficult lives.

In the summer of 2006 the Netherlands is hit by an unprecedented heat wave. The extreme temperatures make the inhabitants of the Indische Buurt, one of Amsterdams
poorer neighbourhoods, looking for a refreshing dive in the local swimmingpool. People from this part of the city, with a high concentration of immigrants, would
normally meet in the cafés and restaurants, but due to the heat the pool has become the favourite place to hang out. In The Swimmers these people swim, gossip and
flirt, and are surprisingly candid about their difficult lives, which under normal circumstances would remain intimate and closed.
